Students participated in a number of creative writing competitions and then showcased their work in our corridors. Primary students actively wrote "Alternative Fairytale Stories"; they created whimsical endings, added different characters, and explored new genres and styles of writing. Each Primary student personalized their stories, putting their own unique literary voice into their written work. Secondary and High School students also worked tirelessly on their written compositions. The focused theme of their writing competition was International Women's Day. The essay question students had to submit was "What does International Women's Day mean to you?". Many students submitted well-thought out compositions, that reflected not only their love of writing but also their keen interest in the topic at hand. These Secondary and High School essays were also put on display in Horizon corridors.
For the past few months, Horizon Hanoi's Penpal Letter Exchange Program has fostered a warm sense of community with neighbouring public schools and their students. In the second half of Horizon's English Enrichment Week, Horizon students hosted their penpals from the public school's Tu Lien Secondary and Tay Ho High School, on Thursday, March 9th, 2017. Excitement and fervor filled our school, as our students enthusiastically gave walking tours to their penpals. It was a delight to see authentic cooperation and leadership from HIBS students, as they used English language as a common ground to engage and communicate with their Vietnamese penpals. After many months of writing back and forth with their penpals, they were finally able to meet the person behind their letters. What they leave with however, is more than just an exchange of words. Rather, a sustained love of the truly globalized community they live in and a deeper understanding of what it means to be a friend.
To conclude our wonderful English Enrichment experience, a number of professionals currently active in their careers joined HIBS Hanoi for a Discussion Panel Session on Friday, March 10th, 2017. The theme and details of the discussion panel centred around the real life application of English in the professional world. Mr Nicholas Cooke from RMIT University in Hanoi joined us, along with Ms Sarah Butyrn from the Language Fellow Program of America. Their discussions fuelled an already prolific interest in higher education and English language engagement. After each talk from the guest speakers, HIBS students were involved in a short Question and Answer period, where they were able to get more information and insight into the interesting world of English literacy work. HIBS extends great gratitude to each guest speaker and hopes to invite them to our campus again in the near future.
