This year from 2 May to 4 May 2018, English Week kicked off with the theme “E!NOVATE with English Week”, so as to inspire students from every grade to imagine and create using the English language. Apart from our captivating Poetry Wall showcasing all of the original poetry written by our students, as well daily riddles for each level, we hosted a number of events that allowed students to be a part of no matter what their English speaking level was.

Our first event of the week was the Spelling Bee, where students were given a set of words to learn beforehand in their classes. The top students from each class, battled it out against each other in front of judges and an audience, trying their best to spell each word correctly. This took place across each level for primary, secondary, and high school.

The following day, students were taken to our giant scrabble board to try and make as many words as they could using the giant letters available. The winning class from each level was selected based on the number of points scored from their words, and were awarded a trophy for their accomplishment.

On our last day of English Week, all students were encouraged to dress up as their favourite literary character from a movie, book, or comic. Other students applied to be in HIBS’ first Literary Fashion Show where they modeled their outfits as their chosen character, and three winners were chosen from each level. In addition to this, groups of students performed short skits and dances.

Lastly, throughout the week, we held 2 competitions that remained constant where students were able participate in their own time. Word Factory was displayed and changed daily, where students tried to make as many words as they could using the 9 letters, and find the one 9 letter word for bonus points. Another activity was 4 Pictures / 1 Story. This involved 4 pictures displayed on a board, and students had to create their own stories using the pictures for inspiration and as a guide.
